Something which recently popped up in a Coaching Session I was doing with a Client is the importance of being organised. I don’t need much excuse to talk about being organised because it is one of my favourite topics. Now I’ll be the first to admit that I do often take being organised to extremes! What I call being organised, others may call borderline OCD. But that’s OK because you don’t have to be as organised as me to recognise how important it is.
Most people can understand the simple common sense idea that the more organised you are, the more productive you are. That just makes sense. But I think even though we may know this academically, it’s easy to underestimate just how important it really is. So I wanted to use this Blog today to highlight the benefits of being organised.
Here Are My Top 4 Reasons You Need To Be Organised….
1.) Clears the Mind.
We often talk about “multi-tasking”, but actually science has proven that this is a myth. The human brain can only do 1 thing at a time. It can do them so well, so efficiently and so quickly that it seems as though we’re multi-tasking when in reality we’re really just performing a series of tasks 1 at a time very quickly.
Being unorganised creates mental clutter. Which increases the number of things we have to think about. I liken it to an iPhone. The more apps you have open at 1 time running in the background, the more of your phones memory you’re using and the slower your phone will be. To speed up our phones, we close any apps that we’re not using which frees up memory and our phone magically speeds up.
Well it’s the same with our brains. Being unorganised is like having a series of apps running in the background of our minds. It creates more things that our subconscious minds are processing behind the scenes. Being organised is like closing all the apps that you’re not currently using which frees up the power of your mind.
2.) Increases Confidence.
Being unorganised can be very sapping on your confidence. Your subconscious mind always knows how organised you are at any moment in time. When we’re disorganised, we’re less likely to be confident in what we do and say. This is because your subconscious mind knows that if you’re unorganised, it will take you longer to find things you need, you can’t speak about a task you haven’t yet completed and so forth. But if you’re organised, you’re more likely to be confident in what you do and say. That is because your subconscious knows that if you need to locate anything, you’ll know exactly where to find it. If you need to justify a point of view, you’ll know all the right things to say because your mind can access all of the information in needs at ease. You have no outstanding tasks that you don’t know the results of. If there was something that needed to be done, you’ve already done it, you know exactly how it worked out and you can confidently present your findings.
3.) Increases Your Productivity / Never Miss Anything.
We tend to understand the importance of being organised when we’re doing something like planning a holiday for example. We know if we’re travelling interstate of overseas we want to have our itinerary worked out so we’re not doubling back in our travels and we can make the most of our holiday time. The less time we spend doubling back over the same places means the more time we have to see more place. Hence, on a well-planned holiday you’ll fit more things into your itinerary than if you had ad hoc plans.
Well it’s the same in life. The more organised we are, the more we’re able to plan in advance. This increases the likelihood that we’ll be able to get more done and be more productive with the same amount of time. It also decreases the chance that we’ll miss out on anything because we’ll be better prepared to spot and plan for opportunities in advance.
4.) Increases What You Can Accomplish Exponentially.
Not only will being organised increase your productivity in the things that you were already planning to do anyway, allowing you to do things more efficiently and often in less time, but you may be surprised to discover that by being organised you can often find more things to do that you weren’t even thinking about.
That’s because when we’re organised, we can often get through things very quickly and so we find that we have time left over. Quite often it will happen that as we’re completing a task, our minds will suddenly come up with a new idea seemingly out of nowhere, that we never would have thought of otherwise.
Now here’s my challenge for you. What kind of a person are you? Are you organised or disorganised?
If you’re an organised person, leave me a comment below to let me know what is the single biggest benefit you believe you’ve gotten in your life as a result of being organised.
If you’re not organised, then I want you to stop right now and make a quick list of no more than about 5 things or area’s where you wish you were more organised. Now pick the one that you feel is most important for you at this moment. Leave me a comment below to let me know what 1 thing you’re going to be more organised in, what your game plan is to get more organised in that area, and what benefits you hope to achieve by being more organised in that area.
