Today I want to talk about a topic which keeps coming up with Clients in my Coaching Sessions. That is, how to visualise your Goals.
This is very important, and it’s something which many people get wrong, then wonder why they can’t seem to manifest their Dreams. It’s not unusual that this happens because as a society, we just don’t teach people how to do Goal Setting. Most schools don’t teach anything about Goals, most work places don’t teach people about Goal Setting. So the average person could quite conceivably go through their entire life without ever knowing anything about Goal Setting. Never knowing that they could consciously control their own reality.
When you do finally find a situation where they teach you about Goal Setting, they teach you all the wrong stuff. Most people who learn about Goal Setting learn about setting SMART Goals. SMART Goals are absolute WORST type of Goals that you could ever set.
There really are no rules when it comes to Goal Setting, except that it has to mean something to YOU. A Goal that doesn’t mean anything to you won’t motivate you. It has been said that a Goal should scare you a little, and excite you a lot.
“A Goal should scare you a little, and excite you a lot!”
Now, this isn’t a Blog on Goal Setting. What I’m talking about here is more specifically about the processes that people go through to actually visualise your Goal, once you’ve established what you’re Goal actually is. Visualisation is so important if you want to achieve your Goal, and most people have no clue how to do it. Worse still, if you get this wrong, it can actually have the reverse effect and you actually find it harder to achieve your Goal. So, with that said, it’s important that you first have a Goal. Someone who talks a lot about Goal Setting is Vishen Lakhiani. He can articulate that far better than I can, so I’ve included a link below to one of the talks he gave about setting Goals.
Once you’ve got what Vishen refers to as an “Ends Goal”, the next logical step for most people is to start visualising your Goals. A lot of people talk about how important it is to visualise your Goals, and many people try. But the feedback that I get from a lot of my Clients is that it just doesn’t seem to be working for them. And time and time again, I find that’s because they’re doing it WRONG!
So, let me explain to you how the process of visualisation works. Visualising your Goal, or anything for that matter, of itself has no power. You have to understand that when people are able to really make visualisation work for them, it’s not actually the visualising of the Goal that makes it a reality, it’s what you’re FEELING that really has the power. The more vividly you FEEL something, the more powerfully that thing is going to manifest itself into your reality, whether or not it’s something that you actually want.
This can just as easily work against you. Imagine running late for work. You worry about getting in trouble from you boss for being late. You begin to visualise yourself getting in trouble, then you start to FEEL the way that you would feel if that were actually happening. As you begin to FEEL this, you attract more of what it is that you’re FEELING, in this case getting in trouble for being late, so you end up being even later! Does this make sense?…
The good news is that it works just as well in a positive way as a negative, and in fact it tends to work even better for things that you feel positive about. So here’s my take on how to visualise your Goals.
Remember that what is going to manifest your Goals are the FEELINGS that you associate with them. The more vividly you feel something the more powerfully it is going to manifest. Visualisation is a visual cue to help put you into that mental state where you start feeling as though you’re actually in that situation. You can visualise all day long, but if you don’t have that feeling that’s associated with what you want then it’s never going to happen. However, to try and conjure up the feelings without visualisation can be hard. So the job of visualisation is trigger the feelings of having what you want. The more powerfully and vividly that you can visualise something, the more powerful and vivid the feelings will be of having it, the more powerful and vivid the feelings are of having it, the more easily and quickly that thing will manifest into your reality!
Are you with me so far?....
OK, so, how do you produce the most powerful visualisations, which will illicit the most powerful feelings, which will manifest that which you want?
“You have to incorporate your reality into your Dream, and then your Dream will be incorporated into your reality!”
I’m always telling my Clients, you have to incorporate your reality into your Dream, and then your Dream will be incorporated into your reality! Let me give you an example, imagine for a moment that you’re driving your Dream Car. Where are you driving? Where are you going? What’s the weather like? If you’re like most people, you probably visualise yourself driving your Dream Car on a warm sunny day, down to the beach, with wind in your hair and sun on your face. That’s because we don’t truly believe that we can achieve that Dream Car, so when we imagine it, we subconsciously think that well, if I’m imagining this, I may as well imagine a fairy tale scenario where everything else is perfect too!
If you want to get your Dream Car, imagine driving your Dream Car on a bitterly cold morning in pouring rain, going down to the local shop in your Ugg Boots to buy milk! In other words, don’t imagine your Dream in a fairy tale like ideal scenario. Incorporate your Dream into your daily reality. Think about all the boring things that you normally do on a daily basis, and then insert your Dream into that normal boring reality.
As you do this, you will start to really believe in the visualisations that you’re having. This will make the visualisations much more powerful. In turn, these more powerful visualisation will enable you to access the feelings of having your Dream as part of your daily reality. Because you’ve made the visualisations so real and so powerful, that will make the feelings of having it more powerful.
These more powerful feelings will manifest your Dream quickly and effortlessly. Before you know it, your Dream will have been incorporated into your reality. That which you were visualising, will now literally show up as part of your reality.
So, here’s my challenge for you. If you have a Goal that you’d really like to be able to manifest but haven’t been able to so far. Use this visualisation technique to really start incorporating your reality into your Dream visualisations and see just how quickly The Universe incorporates your Dreams into your current reality.
