What A Wonderous & Incredible Species We Humans Are!
What a wonderous and incredible species we humans are. In recent times, we’ve seen the worst that Mother Nature can throw at us and we’ve seen the very best that the human spirit is capable of. They say that the devastating fires that we’re living through are a result of climate change, that we are the architects of our own demise, that through the misuse of the resources we’ve been blessed with that we have created not just the road, but the 3 lane Motorway to our own ruin.
Well, all this may be true, but then it is also true that we are a species that is capable of showing the very best of the human spirit. We are a species capable of altering the world in a way that no other animal species ever has or could, and we can do this for good or for bad. We’ve polluted this planet beyond any measure, but we’ve also created agriculture, we have the power (if not the will) to feed the hungry. We have civilization and technology, which for all its’ faults has bought many advantages. A lion on plains of Africa that loses a leg is screwed! A person who loses a leg can lead a pretty normal life. We have the arts, we are a species that has not only born the likes of Mozart and Monet, but also people who are capable of appreciating the intricate and exquisite beauty in such things.
And although humans are capable of unspeakable moral depravity, such things are usually learned, rather than intrinsic, behaviours. Most, if not all, animals protect their young, a pack of animals will safeguard the integrity of the pack and the safety of those within it. But few animal packs will, at the drop of a hat, up and race 300km away to help another pack in need.
What is happening in our country right now as we speak? Thousands of people are putting aside something that they had planned, in order that they may be of service to someone else for no other reason than that person is in need. And that is what we humans do, we help those in need!
We come from all over to do it. Not just from all over the country but also internationally. Stop to think a moment and let it sink in that there are people here, right here right now in this country, who have voluntarily come from places like the US and Canada, left their homes, left their families, to come here to help complete strangers, because that’s the kind of people they are. And you know what, when they’re having crazy fires overseas, firies from here in OZ go over there to help them out too.
Seeing the selfless acts of these people reminds me of the song “Driving The Last Spike” by Genesis,
"We came from the North
We came from the South
With picks and with spades
And a new kind of order
Showing no fear of what lies up ahead
They'll never see the likes of us again."
Driving the Last Spike
From the Album, We Can’t Dance
Genesis
Well, call me an optimist but think that we ALWAYS will see the likes of them again and again and again, because that’s what it is to be human. We, the keepers of the flame of what a sacred thing it is to be human, we set ourselves apart from all other animals. It is not our intelligence that sets us apart but our compassion.
When another is in need, it is our moment to shine. For we are HUMAN, and what a wonderous and incredible species we humans are.
