So this is Part 1 of 2 Blogs which I am dedicating to your relationship with YOU. Making sure that you assign yourself the priority and importance that you deserve.
I’m sure that we’ve already heard all the cliché’s about how important it is to look after yourself, that you can’t help others if you don’t help yourself, put your own oxygen mask on first, and so on. We all know that right? But it’s one thing to know, and another thing to do.
These 2 Blogs were actually inspired by one of my clients who called to re-schedule a booking. No big deal, I know that some times things can come up. But it fascinated me, the reason that he had to cancel his booking, was because he said he was too tired to really get the most out of it because he had been up all night trying to learn a new software program that he’d installed to help his Business.
And you know what, I thought, all credit to this guy. He made a decision to install new software for the furtherment and benefit of his Business. So I can see right there, he’s willing to invest in his Business, which for a Small Business owner, means investing in himself. It proves to me that he believes he is worthy of the investment. Not only that, but the fact he had an appointment with me in the first place, and that he made a decision to re-schedule when he didn’t think he was in the right state to get the most out of our session, absolutely proves that he is assigning to himself the importance that he deserves by understanding the importance of hiring a Life Coach.
So this guys is definitely setting himself up for greatness, but it got me thinking, isn’t it interesting that so often we are willing to put in an extraordinary effort for some things, but quite often, not for ourselves. Most often when we really go out of our way to do something above and beyond, it tends to revolve, one way or another, around making money. If we have a boss, it might be that we’re putting in a HUGE amount of overtime, or we’re doing some kind of a course he help us further in our role or climb that corporate ladder. If we have our own business, it’s probably not uncommon to burn the midnight oil working on one thing or another which is going to benefit the business.
So we’re willing to put in that extra effort in the way of work or invest time, money or both in some kind of education to further ourselves SO THAT…
We’ll be better at work.
We’ll get that promotion.
We’ll get a better job.
We can improve our Business.
But how many times do you ever invest yourself, time or money, into something that will just simply benefit YOU.
The problem is that often we fail to see the benefit in investing in ourselves because often the benefit is often indirect. Use the example of my client, investing his time all night long had a direct pay off. He knew how to operate the system. That has an immediate and direct effect on his business. He’s willing to put in the effort because he can see a tangible benefit. What about doing a degree or some kind of course after work so that you can progress your career. Well, if you put in the effort, at the end you’ll get that piece of paper (a Certificate to say you did it). BOOM, INSTANTLY! You’ve got this piece of paper, now you can say to someone, hey I did this. Now you can go for that new job, promotion, whatever it is. It is direct and tangible benefit.
But if you do something just for yourself, that will also have a benefit, but the benefits can often be intangible. If you hire a personal trainer, you’ll be in better shape. That’s a massive benefit to you, but how do you define that? Sure you can track your weight, so you’ll know if you’ve lost weight, but how do you quantify the difference in how that makes you feel.
And that’s where the true secret lies. You have to actually believe that you are worthy of being the better person that you can be, in order for the investment that it takes to make you that better person seem worthwhile. We’ll deal with this more in Part 2 of the Blog, but for now…
Ask yourself this question…
What is something that you really don’t know enough about right now, BUT could have an impact on your life if you took the time to learn, but you just keep on putting it off because you say that you don’t have time?
Put yourself into the picture of having acquired that knowledge, or done that thing or whatever it is. Take a moment to imagine how your life might look in that scenario. Let’s think this out. Look at traditional approach, say you enrolled in a study course because you wanted to further your career. You might commit to, say, 3 hours per night, 2 nights per week to do a study course part time, because you get the direct benefit of it benefiting your career.
So what if you put that same focus into something that would benefit you, just you. What if you invested 3 hours per night, 2 nights per week into you? What would could you accomplish in that time? What have you been putting off?
Now is the time to step up and invest in yourself!
